This volume contains the proceedings from the conference “Law and Marriage in Medieval and Early Modern Times” which was held at the Carlsberg Academy in May 2011 in Copenhagen..

It includes articles from an international group of scholars of various aspects of marriage, not only from legal but also theological and historical perspective. Both the Middle Ages and the early modern period are covered in this volume. The geographical focus is in Europe. The collection of articles covers a multitude of aspects regarding marriage like the concept of marriage, the practical sides of marriage such as last wills and dowry as well as various marital strategies.

This volume will be of interests to students and scholars working with in European legal culture and cultural, social, and economic history of the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
